Pesto is a traditional sauce originating in Genoa, the main city in the Cinque Terre region. It consists of crushed garlic, pine nuts, coarse salt, basil leaves, and Parmigiano-Reggiano, all blended with Extra Virgin olive oil. The name is the contracted past participle of the Italian verb ‘pestare’, which means to pound, to crush, because according to tradition, the ingredients are "crushed" or grounded in a marble mortar through a circular motion of a wooden pestle.
Sommariva pesto is made according to the ancient Genovese recipe and only with the Genovese DOP basil, grown organically on the family's farm. It has always been one of the lead products of the farm and won several awards.

The ancient Sommariva oil mill is located in Albenga, a historical small town on the west coast of the Ligurian Riviera, in between the walls of the medieval town centre. For more than hundred years the oil mill produces cold Extra Virgin olive oil “mosto”. The production is a traditional artisan process and products are almost all cultivated at the family’s own farm.
